The last data collected for this report was on May 16, 2006. The Population Census is conducted by the Canadian government every five years and is used to determine population, household incomes, ethnicity of household and religious beliefs.
Canadians not born in Canada now make up 51 percent of Burnaby's population. This means that 102,030 people living in Burnaby were not born in Canada. Between 2001 to 2006 Burnaby had an increase of 21,790 immigrants. In comparison Richmond which has a similar size population to Burnaby saw the number of immigrants for the same period increase by 18,000. For British Columbia as a whole the immigrant population is 27 percent.
Though Burnaby has a large non-Canadian born population 86 percent of the population holds Canadian citizenship. Only six percent of Burnaby's population cannot speak either of Canada's two official languages. In Burnaby 36 percent of households are likely to speak languages other than French or English in their homes. Across British Columbia 16 percent of households are likely to speak a language other than either of the two official languages in their homes.
There are many implications stemming from this new Statistcs Canada census report. The large immigrant population will need services such as ESL programs and help in integrating within the community.
